Acetaminophen: An Overview

Warnings and precautions:

Individuals with severe liver disease should refrain from using this medication.

An overdose of acetaminophen has the potential to cause liver damage or even be fatal.

Adults and teenagers weighing at least 110 pounds should not exceed 1000 milligrams (mg) of acetaminophen in a single dose or more than 4000 mg within a 24-hour period.

Children under the age of 12 should not exceed five doses within 24 hours, and the dosage should align with the recommended milligrams per dose based on the child’s weight and age. Always follow the instructions on the label precisely.

It is crucial to avoid using other medicines that contain acetaminophen (APAP) to prevent a potentially fatal overdose.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Discontinue the use of acetaminophen and consult your doctor immediately if you develop skin redness, a spreading rash, blistering, or peeling.
