Dupixent what is it (dupixent uses)
Dupixent (dupilumab) is a medication that is administered through subcutaneous injections under the skin. It is used to treat various inflammatory conditions, including:
- Moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and children 6 months and older who have not responded well to topical prescription therapies or are unable to use them. Dupixent can be used with or without topical corticosteroids.
- Moderate-to-severe eosinophilic or oral-corticosteroid-dependent asthma in adults and children who are at least 6 years old. It is used as an add-on maintenance treatment for asthma and can also treat acute bronchospasm or status asthmaticus.
- Inadequately controlled chronic rhinosinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses with nasal polyps) as an add-on maintenance treatment in adults.
- Eosinophilic esophagitis in adults and children 1 year of age and older who weigh at least 33 pounds (15 kg).
- Prurigo nodularis in adults.
Dupixent eczema works by targeting and binding to a protein called interleukin-4 receptor alpha subunit (IL-4Ra), which is associated with inflammation. By inhibiting IL-4 and IL-3 signaling, Dupixent helps reduce the inflammatory response, including the release of proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, nitric oxide, and IgE. It acts as an interleukin-4 receptor alpha antagonist.
Dupixent was first approved by the FDA on March 28, 2017.
